Ok, so to date, my biggest adventures in exploring electronic music have touched on artists such as postal service, figurine, dntl, fantastic plastic machine, pizzicato 5, and small amounts of air, basement jaxx, and fatboy slim.

I have recently started dating a guy who is heavy into drum and bass. I want to start getting into it too, but am at a loss as for where to start, who to check out, who even makes it.

My musical tastes generally lie in the electic, and away from the mainstream. Please, point me in the direction of interesting/good/unique/awesome/non mainstream/worth listening to Drum and Bass.

Thank you kindly.

I dont think DnB ever falls under the title mainstream. but...

I like:
Bad Company (not the 70's rock band)
DJ Odi
Ed Rush & Optical
Keltech (Welch DnB)
Ganja Kru

Things I do not like:
Roni Size

If you want to expand his horizons maybe you should listen to some more IDMish DnB or DnBish IDM. (Examples: Squarepusher, µ-Ziq and the like)

Jen's got it.

By the way cantstoptharock 'Intelligent Dance Music' is neither intelligent nor dance music. It is possibly the second worst misnomer for electronic music after the term 'electronica'.

Mainstreeam-ish DnB:

Usual Suspects
E-Z Rollerz

...hmm, this all a teeny bit pointless, unless I understand what spectrum your boy is coming from. Dopes release I've heard lately is DJ Kentaro's new CD/ DVD release on Ninja Tune for the Solid Steel series; four deck explosion and remixing of a Ninja Tune back catalogue through entirely new ears

Wait, I say 'mainstream' above because there's a ridiculuous amount of dnb restricted to primarily underground/ limited 12" releases, and it would send you crazy trying to look for them. The above releases though shouldn't be hard to track down. Rather than acts, you should check out different labels, such as Moving Shadow, Trouble On Vinyl, etc.,
