favourite sounds/types of music This community appealed to me (just caught it mentioned through the comments of a friend's LJ) due to the nature of the name, I'm this low genrefication fool myself. I'm an awfully bad music junkie; spent years continually building up my collection (my LJ unfortunately serves as a semi-shopping blog, for instance), and decisively don't limit myself to particular genres. What I'm well versed at? Hip hop of all sorts is my forte. I love my funk. Love my soul. Love my jazz. Love my metal. And a lot of things inbetween.

Hope to contribute well to this community (although, see subject headline above). Examples of the kind of stuff I buy (and the entries that accompany them) are:

This isn't intended to sound like an advertisement for my own journal. Just want you to know where I'm coming from without being too lengthy and overbearing :)

Welcome!

Who are your favourite soul and jazz artists?

(This will have to brief for the moment, as I am at work... just ask for more detail if so you please, and I'll get to it later!)

Jazz-wise, lately I've been really digging my Yusef Lateef Hush N' Thunder, the majority of solo (although I do dig the various Modern Jazz Quartet LPs) Milt Jackson releases, especially Sunflower on CTI, and Jimmy Smith (in all his prolific forms).

As for soul, I like my Stax over my Motown (don't get me wrong, I lopve both!) for the most part, although I have huge lashings of Gladys Knight & The Pips. I dig War, Al Green, Bobby Womack, Staple Sisters...

On and on...

Artists? Graffiti? Gane, Atome, Prowla...

Musically speaking: Muphin, Koolism, Task Force, Mos Def & Talib Kweli (Are Blackstar), Ghostface, People Under The Stairs, Percee P, Rasco, ATCQ, MF DOOM, Slum Village, Digable Planets, Beatnuts, Diverse, Del, Brand Nubian, Bilal, Scienz Of Life, Mnemonic Ascent, so on and so forth.

Instrumentally speaking, I guess Sixtoo, DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, Q*Bert, D-Styles, Babu, DJ Kentaro, RJD2, Paul Nice, Katalyst, Sharpshooters, Koushik...

I've never been one for specific favourites. Having said that, I guess I would take Digable Planets' Blowout Comb, The Roots' Things Fall Apart and Sharpshooters' Twice As Nice to the grave.

I like Illadel better than Things. You listen to Edan?

I dig Things Fall Apart over Illadelph Halflife due to the sonic diversity; the album feels like a compilation in that sense, but still maintains a coherent narrative/ structure. I shouldn't say "to the grave" as much as it is one of those desert island things. That said, Organix for me is a damn fine album too, for the record.

Most definitely listen to Edan; the man strings together great work, be it an MC or producer (re: 'Get Wise '91' on Mr. Lif's Emergency Rations is easily one of my favourite tracks). Finally got that latest Porn Theatre Ushers LP, Taxachusetts, and it was a nice surprise having Edan on there.

Other than Camp Lo (love that Uptown Saturday Night), what's your ism?
